NUTRITION FOR MENTAL HEALTH

I have a special interest in how our food intake, lifestyle and our environment can affect our mind and mental health. There has never been more of a need to support our brain health:

  • Approximately 280 million worldwide have depression. (WHO guidelines, 2024).

  • Roughly 4% of the global population (301 million) currently experience an anxiety disorder. (WHO guidelines, 2024).

  • Within the UK in the last academic year over 2 million pupils were recorded as persistently absent within school (Gov.uk, 2024) mostly related to anxiety.

How can nutrition affect our mental health?

Nutrition can play a vital role in supporting ADHD, ASD, anxiety, depression, and mood disorders by addressing underlying systemic imbalances and physiological factors such as inflammation, neurotransmitter production, and nutrient deficiencies.

Food choices as well as environmental factors can support or hinder our energy levels, brain function, our mood and so much more.

Transforming mood and brain function can occur when:

  • Changes are made to diet;

  • Nutrient levels are adjusted;

  • Sleep patterns are improved;

  • Hormones are balanced;

  • Gut imbalances are supported and corrected;

  • Supporting removal of toxins;

  • Identifying and addressing food sensitivities.
